CDA Consult to publish Counterfeit Electrical Products report

The Communication for Development and Advocacy (CDA Consult) is to publish in September, results of the Counterfeit Electrical Product and Electronic Appliances survey conducted in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The survey conducted in April this year, was to assess the proliferation of Counterfeit Electrical Products and Electronic Appliances in the Region, and establish with empirical data, the estimated volume of counterfeited electrical goods in circulation.

The survey also seeks to gather information on the knowledge of specific counterfeited electrical goods by categories of product as well as by brands and the main counterfeited electrical goods in the Region.

Respondents, mainly from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Northern Electrification Distribution Company, Electrical Contractors, Electrical and Electronic Appliances dealers, were also tasked to list the most counterfeited goods in terms of brand.

Also included in the respondents are procurement officers, media practitioners and other end users, who were to also identify main users of those counterfeited electrical products.

The Brong Ahafo respondents were also required to establish a hierarchy of identified places, where electrical counterfeited goods are being sold and assess the perception of damage caused by illicit or counterfeited electrical goods in the Region.

“Adopt zero tolerance for counterfeit electrical products” – Mr Gokaldas

Mr Vijay P. Gokaldas, Electrical Product Authentication Expert on Thursday called on Ghanaians to adopt zero tolerance for counterfeit electrical products; as fake goods are death traps, which must be avoided for the protection of lives and properties.

Mr Gokaldas noted that, Ghana must adopt the policy of zero tolerance for fake goods, especially electrical products and electronic appliances, and urged the public to deal with accredited companies and not to take the authenticity of electrical products for granted.

“Actively seek information and education about any electrical product you intend purchasing, as it helps in avoiding counterfeit products,” Mr Gokaldas, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Services Merchandise Limited (SML) stated in Accra.

CDA Consult commends GSA

The Communication for Development and Advocacy Consult (CDA Consult) on Tuesday commended the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) for a market surveillance, which has established that 96 per cent of electrical products sold in parts of Accra were fake.

The GSA surveillance discovered that, products sold at the Opera Square and Zongo lane, the hub of electrical products in Accra were counterfeit and failed to meet standards.

The report revealed that out of the 204 electrical products sampled for laboratory testing, more than 92 per cent of them failed to meet the GSA L.I. 1541 labelling requirements, adding that, all extension boards failed the critical parameters test and general labelling requirements.

The Surveillance also revealed that more than 94 per cent of footwear sampled failed to conform to standards.
